FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions
What is Tarot, actually?
Tarot cards are a series of images originally derived from Italian and French playing cards.
Not as ancient or mysterious as you’d imagine, I know!
The classic Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck, the type you are probably most familiar with, was inspired by historical playing cards. In 1910, Arthur Edward Waite commissioned artist Pamela Coleman Smith to create a deck loosely based on the Marseilles and Sola-Busca tarot. Pamela Coleman Smith reimagined the traditional images of those early tarot decks into a series of archetypical and mystical images to work with for self-realization.
If you’ve ever heard of Carl Jung’s work with archetypes and the collective unconscious, or of Joseph Campbell’s book, Hero with a Thousand Faces, tarot connects with both beautifully. Inside this deck of 78 cards is the hero’s journey: the human experience represented, visually and archetypically, in a box of cards.
Here’s how it works in a nutshell: tarot reflects back to us answers from our intuition and subconscious using the imagery and symbolism from the cards. It allows us a way to tap into a deep inner-knowing just below the surface of everyday consciousness. That’s why many folks use tarot for journaling prompts or to spark creative ideas (did you know that some plot elements of Mad Men were planned using Tarot? Seriously!)
But metaphysically speaking, I believe that tarot can be used as an energetic barometer of what’s going on around you. It’s like a quick snapshot of your universe that can be used to strategize your life and actions.
My style of reading tarot isn’t the fixed fate, fortune-telling type. The tarot doesn’t have to be used in a way that locks you into an unchangeable result. It’s a way to empower my clients to make the best decisions possible with the information presented in the cards. Back to top.
What kind of readings do you offer?
I have a variety of specific and custom readings at the shop. I also offer special seasonal readings for subscribers of my newsletter (they are limited, secret offerings for those lucky folk!). How do readings work over email? Don’t I need to be in person?
Tarot does work over email. The testimonials you’ll find on the website are from my email clients. You don’t have to be in-person or send a picture, etc. You’re welcome to include your astrological details in your question, but other than that, I’ll be able to tap into your energy remotely. How does this work?
I choose a deck intuitively for your question. I’ll shuffle the cards and hold sacred space for your question to be answered through the tarot. The cards that are drawn for you will be photographs and included with the PDF of your reading. Optionally, you’re always welcome to include your astrological information to be taken into account during the reading. Back to top.
